A partial payment receipt needs everything a normal rent receipt has, plus one crucial line: the balance still due. Without it, a receipt for part of the rent can later look like a receipt for all of it.
In many states, accepting partial rent can affect a landlord’s options, especially if an eviction notice has already been served. Landlords often note on the receipt that the payment is accepted as a partial payment, and some jurisdictions have specific rules for how that must be worded. If you are in that situation, check your local rules or speak with a local attorney first.
