Why cash rent always needs a receipt

With a check or transfer, the bank keeps a record. With cash, the receipt is the only evidence the payment happened. That protects the tenant if payment is ever disputed and gives the landlord an accurate record for taxes.

Good habits for cash rent

Count the cash together, write the receipt on the spot, and have both sides keep a copy. If you prefer paper, carry a few blank printable receipts; if you prefer digital, download the PDF here and text or email it to the tenant.

Is a cash receipt required?

Several states and cities require landlords to give a written receipt when rent is paid in cash; New York is a well-known example. Requirements vary, so check the rules where the property is located.

Common questions

Does a landlord have to give a receipt for cash rent?

In several states and cities, yes (New York is one example). Even where it is not required, a receipt protects both the landlord and the tenant.

What if my landlord won’t give a receipt?

Ask in writing, keep a copy of your request, and consider switching to a traceable method such as check, money order or bank transfer.

Is a handwritten cash receipt okay?

Generally yes, as long as it has the key details and a signature. The blank printable receipts make handwritten ones neater.

Can I add a PAID stamp?

Yes. It is on by default for receipts and can be switched off in the Payment section.

Where is the receipt saved?
